Coach’s Update – Competition

Hello, Beaver Golf Fans!

On a weekly basis I plan to be updating you with my thoughts about the progress of our team throughout the 2011-2012 season.  My hope is this blog gives you an inside look into what Beaver Golf is all about and keeps you up to date on our daily happenings.  With our first event washed out in Washington, it feels like forever since the guys have been on campus and all we have been doing is practicing.  I can’t wait to get on the plane Friday and head to La Quinta, Calif., with the team to compete in the Prestige @ PGA West.  The field in our first event will be very strong with six other Universities from the Pac-12 Conference being represented.

We have seen some great scoring from the guys during our last two rounds of qualifying and I’m just counting down the minutes until I can see them perform in a tournament…and hoping we can keep this momentum going!  With the event in Seattle washed out I decided to keep the same 5 for at PGA West but with only three days between PGA West and our next event, the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Cal-Berkeley), it has given us time to hold another qualifying. The only issue is I don’t really know what we are qualifying for or how many spots in the lineup will change, that will depend on how we perform in The Prestige.

Scoring during both rounds of qualifying has produced collectively the best scores at two of our home courses (Illahe Hills CC & Spring Hill CC) that I have seen since becoming Head Coach at Oregon State.  Yesterday during the 2nd round at Spring Hill CC, Jonnie Motomochi and Nick Chianello posted the low rounds of the year with a 64 and 65, respectively.  Both of them finished 6th/7th in our first qualifier and are knocking on the door to make sure they have the chance to compete at Cal’s event.  Last year the team lacked some depth and typically our top 5 were set for each event.  This year it will be a completely different story with all 10 guys with the ability to represent the team. I believe this competition will force the guys to bring their best to practice each and everyday or they know they might be sitting at home.  And if the scores during qualifying #1 and #2 are any indication of what lies ahead, we are headed in a good direction.  I can’t wait to get this season started.

Live scoring for The Prestige will be available at Goflstat.  Play begins at 12:30 PM with a shotgun start on the PGA West – Norman Course.

Go Beavs!
