Pre-Season Report, Day 4: Freshman Takes Charge

The day began at 8:00 AM with a team run thru the Sunriver Resort with freshman Scott Kim outpacing his long-time friend Alex Moore to be the first one back to the home.  The same story held true on the golf course as the freshman played like a Senior and posted a 2nd round 71 at the difficult Tetherow Golf Course.  With rounds of 67-71 (E par total), Kim holds a 5-shot lead over Nick Sherwood (68-75).

Scott Kim watches his tee shot on the par 4, 15th.

Moore, who shot 74 in the 2nd round, graduated from Hanford HS four years before Kim but the two have known each other for almost 10 years as they grew up playing Horn Rapids Golf Course.  During their time at Hanford Moore and Kim captured individual State Championships in Washington.  Perhaps they are on the same paths at Oregon State as well.

Senior, Casey King, matched Kim’s 71 for the low round of the day to move into a tie for 3rd in qualifying at +6. Jonnie Motomochi, Nick Chianello, and David Fink are all tied for 5th at the moment at +7.  After the team run this morning the team met for about an hour to discuss their goals, talk about what it takes to be great, and Coach Reehoorn shared with them author Daniel Coyle’s ‘Angry Birds Theory of Success’ as it relates to the underdog.

Below are the scores after two rounds.  The third round will begin at 10:20 Wednesday morning.

1) Scott Kim – E

2) Nick Sherwood – +5

3) Alex Moore – +6

3) Casey King – +6

5) David Fink – +7

5) Nick Chianello – +7

5) Jonnie Motomochi – +7

8) Brian Jung – +15

9) Matt Rawitzer – +16

9) Jeff Petroff – +16

Hard to figure out the scores listed through two rounds, as Kim (66-71= 137) looks like he was actually six shots ahead of Sherwood (68-75= 143) heading into today. And if Trysting Tree was playing to a par 64 and Tetherow is a par 72, then Kim would be one over (not Even) and Sherwood +7 (not +5) heading into today’s 4th round… but I might just be very confused.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing everyone up in Bremerton on Sunday!
